Boris Plotz is the middle-aged mortician in a small Welsh village who has loved Betty Rhys-Jones from afar since their childhood. His chance to declare his love arrives when Betty's bedridden and shrewish mother-in-law dies. Betty's town-councilor husband is having an affair with his secretary Meredith, though good-hearted Betty refuses to expose and divorce him. Instead, Boris and Betty settle on eloping, which involves an undertaker's specialist skills. Adding to the plot's complications is rival undertaker, Frank Featherbed, who wants to drive Boris out of business with two-for-one deals and themed funerals.
