Deadwood Set Tour
Deadwood Set Tour

The sets created for Deadwood are so extraordinarily detailed and realistic, series creator David Milch has been known to get ideas for the show just by walking the town's streets. "David said he wanted the town to itself to be a character," says production designer Maria Caso.

It took a lot of research, a lot of attention to detail and a lot of dirt—80 truckloads—to recreate the mining camp in all its muddy splendor. Now, in an HBO online exclusive, Caso takes us on an insider's interactive tour of her Deadwood, from the gritty Gem saloon to the high-rolling Chez Amis.

Costume designer Katherine Jane Bryant remembers the first time she fit Keith Carradine in his full costume. "He turned around to the mirrors," she says. "And he said, 'Oh my god! I'm Wild Bill Hickok!'"

Such transformations are common on the set of Deadwood, where Victorian ladies, New York dandies, road agents, Chinese laborers, saloon owners and lawmen all come to life in painstakingly researched period clothes. In HBO.com's all-new behind-the-scenes feature, Bryant shows us step by step how the stories of Deadwood's colorful characters can be read in their costumes...

The Real Deadwood

Series creator David Milch talks about gold, Custer, betrayal — and the remarkable accidents of history that created the wildest town in the West. Milch spent months immersing himself in the true stories of the people of 19th century Deadwood, absorbing not just the events, but also the subtle motivations behind them.
