Michael Dorsey (Hoffman) has a problem - he is an actor but no producer in New York will hire him. In desperation, he dresses up as a woman, Dorothy Michaels, and lands a part in a soap series. All goes well until he falls in love with his lovely co-star, Julie (Lange). While Michael plans to reveal his secret to Julie, her father has secretly fallen for "Dorothy."
