Strong-willed Samantha "Sam" is a teenager whose father died in the Vietnam war. Her Uncle Emmett (Willis), also a veteran of the war, cares for her. Sam is determined to find out everything about her father's experience in the war but Emmett tries to discourage her. Sam's journey of discovery then becomes another journey of sorts for Emmett as he tries to come to terms with his own past.
