Taking a look at high society in 1870s New York, this film, directed by Martin Scorsese, follows the life of young lawyer, Newland Archer, when he falls passionately in love with Countess Olenska, an exotic beauty whose independence of mind is starkly at odds with the social attitudes of the time. However, as he is already engaged to the ideal society woman, May Welland, who also happens to be the Countess' cousin, he is forced to choose between what society expects of him, and what he wants out of his own life.
