Vada is happily settled into a new life with her father and a very pregnant Shelley. She decides to write about her deceased mother for a school assignment and travels to California to uncover clues to her identity. There, she forms a reluctant friendship with her tour guide and together, they embark on a journey of discovery, in which Vada learns more about first love, her place in her evolving family, making her mark in the world, and pursuing a dream.
