Rachel Samstat (Streep) is a food writer for a New York magazine who meets Washington columnist Mark Forman (Nicholson) at a wedding and ends up falling in love with him. They get married, live the life of the perfect couple and create a family together. Everything goes well till Rachel is pregnant with a second child and Mark is out falling in love with another woman.
