Before Dead Poets Society and Mr. Holland's Opus, there was this memorable tale of a student who inspires his brilliant but beleaguered and unappreciated teacher. This second film version of a play features Albert Finney in a widely acclaimed performance as Andrew Crocker-Harris, a public school Latin teacher facing a forced, early retirement. It doesn't help that the rest of his life is in a mess too – his young, beautiful wife fancies the brash but popular American chemistry teacher. Crocker-Harris comes to the tragic realization that he is alone at school, and at home. It takes one student's act of kindness to give him the courage to start his life anew. Directed by Mike Figgis, of the Oscar-winning Leaving Las Vegas fame.
